Accessibility statement

The Lights of Orit is committed to equal, dignified and independent access to our website for every visitor, including people with disabilities.

Our commitment

We believe the people who support Israel's soldiers should be able to read our stories, view our galleries and donate without barriers. We build accessibility into the website itself — semantic structure, keyboard operation and readable contrast — rather than relying on an accessibility widget or overlay.

Standard we work toward

We are working toward Israeli Standard 5568 Part 1 at Level AA, using WCAG 2.1 Level AA as the technical implementation target. Remediation is in progress; this statement describes the adjustments completed to date and does not yet declare full conformance.

Adjustments implemented

  • A “Skip to main content” link as the first keyboard stop on every page.
  • Semantic landmarks (header, navigation, main, footer) and a single descriptive H1 per page.
  • Full keyboard operation of the menus, including Escape to close and focus returned to the menu button.
  • A strong, always-visible focus indicator; the focus outline is never removed.
  • Accessible names for icon-only controls and social links.
  • Alternative text for informative images; decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
  • Form labels associated with their fields, required fields identified, and status or error messages announced.
  • Responsive reflow down to a 320 CSS pixel viewport, and support for text resizing to 200 percent.
  • Reduced-motion support: non-essential animation is disabled when the operating system requests it.

Testing

Testing includes automated rule-engine checks, keyboard-only journeys and responsive/zoom testing on current desktop browsers, iPhone Safari and Android Chrome. Screen reader testing with NVDA and VoiceOver is carried out as part of ongoing review.

Known limitations

  • Donations are processed by an external service. We cannot correct accessibility issues within that third-party system. If you encounter a barrier while donating, contact us and we will assist you personally to complete your donation.
  • Some videos and embedded social media content are supplied by third parties and may not yet include captions or a transcript. We add text alternatives as they become available; contact us for the content of any specific item.
  • Some archive photographs carry brief alternative text that is still being reviewed and improved item by item.
